India vs Afghanistan T20I: Washington Sundar Fit, But Is Jasprit Bumrah Ready?

India have received a major boost ahead of their three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, with Washington Sundar declared fit and available for selection.

The bigger question, however, remains around Jasprit Bumrah.

While Sundar has cleared his fitness assessment after recovering from a hamstring injury, Bumrah is still awaiting the final clearance that will determine whether he can take part in the series.

The first India vs Afghanistan T20I is scheduled for September 13 in Delhi, leaving the Indian team with limited time to finalise its combination.

Washington Sundar Gives India a Timely Boost

Washington Sundar missed India’s recent two-Test series in Sri Lanka because of a hamstring injury. His return is important because India’s T20I squad has several players whose fitness has been closely monitored.

Sundar offers India more than just an off-spin option. His ability to contribute with the bat gives the team additional flexibility, particularly in the middle and lower order.

With Hardik Pandya unavailable for this series, Sundar’s all-round ability could become even more valuable. His availability also gives captain Shreyas Iyer another option when deciding how India balance their batting and bowling combinations.

Sundar has now been declared fit for the Afghanistan series, according to reports on September 9.

Jasprit Bumrah Remains the Biggest Fitness Question

The situation surrounding Jasprit Bumrah is more complicated.

Bumrah was included in India’s squad for the Afghanistan T20Is, but his selection came with a fitness condition. The BCCI squad announcement specifically listed Bumrah among the players subject to fitness clearance.

That means being named in the squad does not automatically confirm that he will play.

Bumrah’s fitness will be particularly important because India are also preparing for upcoming international commitments after the Afghanistan series. There is little reason for the team management to take unnecessary risks with its premier fast bowler if he is not completely ready.

For now, the situation remains a wait-and-watch one.

What Happens If Bumrah Is Not Available?

If Bumrah does not receive clearance, India still have several fast-bowling options. Arshdeep Singh is already part of the squad and would be expected to carry a significant share of the new-ball responsibility.

Harshit Rana is another option, although his own fitness situation is also being monitored.

The absence of Bumrah would therefore not leave India without quality pace bowling, but it would remove the experience and control that he brings to the attack.

Bumrah’s ability to bowl during the powerplay and return at the death makes him particularly difficult to replace.

India Have a Strong T20I Squad

India have selected a near full-strength squad for the three-match series.

Shreyas Iyer will captain the team, with Tilak Varma as vice-captain. The squad also includes Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi and Arshdeep Singh.

The squad announcement also confirmed that several players are subject to fitness clearance.

The three matches will be played in Delhi on September 13, 15 and 17.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Adds Another Interesting Storyline

One of the biggest attractions of the India vs Afghanistan T20I series will be Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The young batter has been included in the squad after making an impression during India’s recent T20I assignments.

His presence gives India another attacking option at the top of the order. There is already discussion about whether he could form an opening partnership with Sanju Samson.

That combination has not yet been properly tested at international level, making the selection of India’s opening pair one of the most interesting questions before the first match.

For Sooryavanshi, the series could represent another important step in his international career.

Afghanistan Will Not Be an Easy Opponent

Afghanistan also have enough quality to make this series competitive. Their squad contains experienced T20 players, including Rashid Khan, while Ibrahim Zadran is set to lead the side.

Afghanistan’s strength in spin bowling could create an interesting battle against India’s aggressive batting lineup.

Playing all three matches in Delhi should also give both teams familiar conditions, although India will enter the series as the stronger side on paper.

Why Bumrah’s Availability Matters

For India, the biggest issue before the opening match is not necessarily batting depth.

It is bowling balance.

If Bumrah is cleared, India could field an attack combining his experience with Arshdeep Singh and other pace options, while also having several quality spinners available. If he is unavailable, India will need to decide whether to strengthen the pace department or use the opportunity to give another player an extended run.

Either way, the decision should become clearer once the final fitness assessments are completed.

India vs Afghanistan T20I Series: What to Watch

The three-match series offers several storylines beyond the result. Washington Sundar’s return will be closely watched after his injury. Bumrah’s fitness will remain the biggest talking point until his clearance is confirmed.

Shreyas Iyer will also face another test as India’s T20I captain, while Vaibhav Sooryavanshi could attract plenty of attention if he gets his opportunity.

The series begins on September 13, with the second and third T20Is following on September 15 and 17.

The Big Question Before September 13

Washington Sundar’s fitness is good news for India, but the biggest piece of the puzzle is still missing.

Will Jasprit Bumrah be cleared to play?

India have enough depth to compete strongly without him, but a fully fit Bumrah would give the team another level of confidence and balance.

Until the final clearance arrives, his availability will remain the biggest talking point surrounding the India vs Afghanistan T20I series.

For Indian cricket fans, the wait will end soon. The opening match in Delhi is just around the corner, and the final team combination could depend heavily on the fitness reports coming in before the series begins.
